I was going through the saved items in my Google reader this evening and came across this post from Wisebread that I had saved.Called "How to Have a Frugal Vacation and Still Treat Yourself", its a good list of all of the ways that you can save money when planning your trip. However, to my mind it goes a little far... like the advice to leave the credit card at home and just use travellers' cheques. Sounds good in theory, but the last time I travelled with traveller's cheques, the bank was the only place that would cash them and I ended up paying loads of fees, which made me indignant and crabby and not a very nice person to travel with.
Still, these are my favourite pieces of advice in the post:
1. Scrimp on breakfast - just make yourself a piece of toast or some cereal like you would if you were at home. Unless you're going to have one of these breakfasts, that is. Nothing special about an over-priced flacid sausage and watery eggs in the hotel restaurant...
2. Choose your amenities - if you're not going to use room service at the hotel, why pay for the convenience? However, unlike the author of this piece, I take any opportunity I can to sprawl around a hotel room in a bathrobe, usually right after jumping on the bed.
3. If you're visiting a city, don't bother renting a car - I don't have a car at home. Chances are if I need a car to see the city, it's not really my kinda city anyway.
